Good to Grab and Go Dec 28, 2008
By David Rinehart My eight-year-old son had been agitating for his own digital camera for nearly a year. This fall, he made sure *everyone* - grandparents, great-grandmother, basically everyone who usually gives him a present at Christmas - knew he wanted a camera. My in-laws charged me with the task of finding an appropriate camera for them to give.
After checking stores (even those going out of business...) and comparing specs and reviews online, I selected the Polaroid i531. My criteria, for what it's worth, were (1) easy to operate (remember, he's eight); (2) good preview/review screen (if he has to wait to see the pictures, he won't use it); (3) enough resolution to yield good 4x6 prints; (4) common battery type (no plug-it-into-the-wall-and-wait-for-it-to-recharge); and (5) under $100.
With respect to those criteria, the camera is quite easy to operate - the default mode ("Q" mode) makes it a true point-and-shoot camera - with numerous modes, options, and controls for the experienced (or adventurous) photographer. The preview/review screen is a good size, well lit, and good color.
The default resolution is 5MP, but I have him using it at 3MP, in part to cut down on the picture size in storage. Finally, the camera uses two AA batteries. When he first got the camera, he seemed to go through a lot of batteries, but I think that may be because he was taking a *lot* of pictures in a dimly lit room, then reviewing those pictures with everyone there.
In summary, the Polaroid i531 seems to be appropriate for anyone needing a good, quick, everyday camera, whether they be an eight-year-old beginning shutterbug or an experienced photographer.
Nice Rugged Camera Jan 21, 2009
By Spence the Elder I think Polaroid may have discontinued this model as I picked this one up on clearance at the local Kmart for $25. Very nice, rugged 5 mp camera. The view screen encompasses around 70% of the back of the camera body giving you a very good look at what your shooting at. This camera is as simple or complex as you want to make it. Not unlike my cell phone, (I know this doesn't apply to anyone but me:), the i531 has more features than I'll ever use. On the slightly down side, the internal memory on this camera is slim and none. I bought mine and went camping that weekend. Much to my chagrin, I discovered that the memory was full after only taking 14 photos in the 5mp mode. Needless to say I was rather surprised at the, IMHO, very low amount of on board memory. The good news is that with the addition of even the lowest costing memory card, (512mb card cost me about $2.99), my i531 will hold around 144 in 5mp mode and it will hold great deal more if used in a lower resolution mode. Obviously you will need a much, much larger memory card if you wish to use the video features that this model offers.
My only real complaint about this model is the lag time between pushing the button and the photo being taken. This is not a camera I would recommend for high speed action shots or sporting events, it is however, just fine for everyday, "hanging out", photography.

Great for beginners, but should know that it doesn't hold many pics without a memory card and you "shouldn't" use a 2 or higher Apr 08, 2008
By Mrs. Heather L. Bush I bought for my 55 year old mother-in-law for Christmas. I thought it was a good size and easy to use. The only thing is that without a memory card, it doesn't hold but three or four photos. You have to buy a memory card and it needs to be a 2 or below.... still not alot! Will need to download often.
